Carbonell's academic background served him well. He was taught at an early age to carve, which later on, became his main technique for the creation of his bas-reliefs and sculptures.

From his early religious clay bas-reliefs in Cuba, as "The Last Supper", his themes evolved later on into carvings of Lovers, Mother and Childs, and philosophical themes such as "The Circus of Life". In his carvings, less than one inch in depth, Carbonell will bring to life his subject matters in intricate compositions.

Carbonell carved close to the subject matter, carving what he saw in his imagination, practically unrecognizable to the observer's eye. Once he moved it away, the bas-relief came to life.
